In the weeks leading up to the release of their latest LP, Death Magnetic, Metallica did very little in the way of actual promotion for the effort. They didn’t make the late-night TV rounds or appear on any talk shows. The album’s September 12 release date came and went with very little fanfare and the record still went on to scan close to 500,000 units in just three days, earning Metallica their fifth-consecutive chart-topping debut.

Four weeks later, the album has passed the million-sold mark and will be at #5 on the Billboard albums chart next week. And even though they’re not hurting for publicity, Metallica will make their first North American live television performance of the year (they have appeared on TV in the U.K.). On October 16, the band will take the stage when the annual Los Premios MTV Latino America 2008 take over Guadalajara, Mexico. The awards, which will be held inside the Auditorio Telmex, will air live at 9 p.m. ET, only on MTV Tr3s. Metallica will be performing the first single from Death Magnetic, “The Day That Never Comes.”

Pain and his record company sent out cease-and-desist orders to put “Silver and Gold” on permanent pause, but its popularity was even greater than Pain’s official first single, “Can’t Believe It,” during its initial launch.

“That pushed the single back, then we had to push the album back,” Pain said. ” ‘Can’t Believe It’ was getting overtaken by ‘Silver and Gold.’ It was just a lot.”

Songwriter Beau Dozier: Asked about reports that earlier surgery was not as successful, Barker said, “It was a misunderstanding. I woke up from my surgery with no pain medication at one point! Imagine how that would feel! But the doctors here are amazing.”

As for how much longer he might be in the hospital, Barker optimistically said it shouldn’t be more than two weeks if all goes well. “I hope not much longer. I sit here and read books and watch TV,” he said. “I have had outstanding support from my family and friends. Shanna has been here as much as she could be. I couldn’t do it without them.”

Not only is he optimistic about his recovery, but Barker is ready to get back to work, and most importantly his family. “I can’t wait to get to work on my record. I lost one of my best friends in this crash,” he said. “I can’t wait to get back to writing and expressing myself, get back into the swing of things. I have so much stuff just jumbled in my head right now. I can’t wait!

“I’m trying to have a quick recovery and play the drums again and be able to hold my kids again,” he added.

I listen to these bands, and I wish I could do all of that, but I can’t.”

According to Vibe magazine’s fans, Lil Wayne isn’t “The Best Rapper Alive.” He isn’t even in the top two. After weeks of online voting, Eminem was crowned the globe’s top MC in a tournament-style contest.

In a contest on the magazine’s Web site, 64 of today’s top rappers from MTV News’ reigning “Hottest MC in the Game” Kanye West toRick Ross, Nas and T.I. were given brackets, similar to NCAA basketball teams during March Madness. Fans began voting on head-to-head matchups in July, with MCs gradually being eliminated until Marshall Mathers was tapped as the ultimate victor this month, beating out Brooklyn lyric guru Jay-Z. Slim Shady received 69 percent of the votes in the finals. The magazine said more than 920,000 votes were cast.

“It’s obviously an honor to have won the fans’ support by being voted the Best Rapper Alive,” Em said in a statement released Tuesday (October 7). “I don’t think that there is any one rapper that is simply the best, though. Everyone who was in consideration and many others are the best at certain things, and at what they do. But since Vibe’s offering the distinction, hell yeah, I’ll accept!”

Tokio Hotel’s Bill Kaulitz said yet again that the group did not expect to walk away from the VMAs as winners. “I have no words!” he gushed after the show. “We are so surprised and excited. We never expected it!”

Celebs also weighed in on whose performance best rocked the show. “Hills” star Lauren Conrad said, “Actually, [my favorite performance] was Kid Rock,” who performed his hit “All Summer Long.” “It was amazing. He vocally sounded amazing. His performance was so great.”

While the Jonas Brothers didn’t get to introduce Britney Spears at the Video Music Awards as they had hoped, they did get to meet her later on in the night.

Lil Wayne Flies Overnight From VMAs To New York Court Date

Lil Wayne may have missed a recent court date in Arizona because of his dentist, but the 2008 Video Music Awards weren’t going to keep him from making a scheduled court hearing in New York early Monday afternoon (September 8).

Fresh from his VMA performance and Moonman win for Best Hip-Hop Video in Hollywood on Sunday night, Wayne appeared in a Manhattan courtroom for a hearing related to his 2007 arrest on a single gun charge.

Rihanna opened the show with a spooky take on “Disturbia,” preceded by a procession of zombies as she was rolled onto the stage in what looked like a giant metallic wedding cake, wearing a black bustier and looking like a robot from the postapocalyptic future. A short time later, T.I. returned to the VMA stage to perform “Whatever You Like.” Escorting a fine young lady in a hot-pink dress, the dapper rapper walked his friend across the Paramount backlot, taking her to a fur shop, a club and in a ride in his Phantom, all the while explaining the lengths of his largesse, which included, in order, stacks of cash, Patr�n on ice, popped bottles and a private jet.

There were also some awards handed out. Picking up her first Moonman, for Best Female Video � which she won over another VMA lady-in-waiting, Mariah Carey � Britney called the moment “an honor” and thanked God, her fans, her family and her “beautiful boys.” She repeated those thanks later in the show, when she took the Best Pop Video, also for “Piece of Me,” professing to be “speechless” but saying, “This means a lot. Thank you.”
